Cytogenetic mapping of the ALMT (aluminum-activated malate transporter) gene in wheat genotypes Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Érica Cristina de; Pinto-Maglio,Cecília Alzira Ferreira.
ABSTRACT: Presence of the ALMT1 (aluminum-activated malate transporter) gene confers resistance to aluminum toxicity in Triticum aestivum (common wheat). No resistant cultivars of Triticum turgidum ssp. Durum Desf. (durum wheat) have been registered in Brazil. The aim of this study was to map the ALMT1 through application of the FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) technique in five wheat genotypes, common and durum, from the Active Germplasm Bank (AGB) of the Instituto Agronômico (IAC): BH 1146, P19, P33, Anahuac, and IAC 1003. FISH-ALMT1 signals were registered in Anahuac (sensitive) chromosomes and in BH 1146, P19, and P33 (resistant) chromosomes. In the three resistant genotypes, a characteristic double FISH signal was found, located in different...

Effects of aluminum on the elongation and external morphology of root tips in two maize genotypes Bragantia
Souza,Leandro Torres de; Cambraia,José; Ribeiro,Cleberson; Oliveira,Juraci Alves de; Silva,Luzimar Campos da.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of toxic levels of aluminum (Al) on the growth and external morphology of root tips in two maize genotypes with differential Al tolerance. The maize genotypes UFVM-100 (Al-sensitive) and UFVM-200 (Al-tolerant) were treated with 0 and 50 mM Al in a 0.5 mM CaCl2 solution at pH 4.5; root elongation, Al content and the external morphology of the root tips were evaluated. Chemical analysis, hematoxylin staining and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) showed greater Al accumulation in the root tips of the UFVM-200 genotype. The inhibition of root elongation in the UFVM-100 genotype, however, was much stronger than in the UFVM-200 genotype. Both maize genotypes exhibited visible and intense...

Initial root length in wheat is highly correlated with acid soil tolerance in the field Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Jorge Fernando.
ABSTRACT: In acid soils, toxic aluminum ions inhibit plant root growth. In order to discriminate aluminum (Al) tolerance, trustful screening techniques are required. In this study, 20 wheat cultivars, showing different levels of Al tolerance, were evaluated in a short-term soil experiment to access their relative root length (RRL). Moreover, the alleles of two important genes (TaALMT1 and TaMATE1B) for Al tolerance in wheat were discriminated. Both of these genes encode membrane transporters responsible for the efflux of organic acids by the root apices that are thought to confer tolerance by chelating Al. Genotypes showing TaALMT1 alleles V and VI and an insertion at the TaMATE1B promoter were among the ones showing greater RRL. Mechanisms of Al...

Mapping aluminum tolerance loci in cereals: A tool available for crop breeding Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Inostroza-Blancheteau,Claudio; Soto,Braulio; Ibáñez,Cristian; Ulloa,Pilar; Aquea,Felipe; Arce-Johnson,Patricio; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie.
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the main factor limiting crop productivity in acidic soils around the world. In cereals, this problem reduces crop yields by 30-40%. The use of DNA-based markers linked to phenotypic traits is an interesting alternative approach. Strategies such as molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) in conjunction with bioinformatics-based tools such as graphical genotypes (GGT) have been important for confirming introgression of genes or genomic regions in cereals but also to reduce the time and cost of identifying them through genetic selection. These biotechnologies also make it possible to identify target genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) that can be potentially used in similar crops to increase their productivity. This review...

Partial diallel cross between exotic and adapted maize populations evaluated in acid soil Scientia Agricola
Morello,Camilo de Lellis; Miranda Filho,José Branco de; Gorgulho,Eliana Patrícia.
In Brazil, acid soils represent a large portion of the agricultural area and the development of cultivars with tolerance to acidity has shown to be feasible. The identification of germoplasm potentially tolerant to acidity was the purpose of this work. Two distinct groups of maize (Zea mays L.) populations were crossed according to the partial diallel mating scheme: Group [1] with six adapted populations and Group [2] with seven exotic varieties. All varieties and crosses were evaluated under the condition of acid and low fertility soil. Traits analyzed were: EY- ear yield, PH- plant height and EH- ear height. Outstanding varieties per se, with yield higher than 3 t ha-1, were SUWAN-2, TAITINGA, TAIÚBA and IUBATÃ in Group [1]; and CUPURICO DMR, TUXPEÑO...

Pedology and plant physiognomies in the cerrado, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
NERI,ANDREZA V.; SCHAEFER,CARLOS E.G.R.; SOUZA,AGOSTINHO L.; FERREIRA-JUNIOR,WALNIR G.; MEIRA-NETO,JOÃO A.A..
This study was carried out in Paraopeba National Reserve. It aims to classify and evaluate the soil of the studied area and to verify the influence of soil attributes on vegetation by testing the following hypotheses: 1) under woodland physiognomies (Cerradão) the soil fertility is higher and the Al content lower; 2) open savanna occurs only in areas with high Al contents. For this purpose, representative soils in the Paraopeba National Reserve were mapped, identified, and samples from five profiles were analyzed. The environmental gradient was easily observed by principal components analyses, where the differences between the sites were highlighted. The Spearman correlation was used to verify the hypothesis. The correlation between vegetation (basal area,...

Reaction of wheat genotypes to soil aluminum differential saturations BABT
Costa,Antonio; Campos,Luís Alberto Cogrossi; Riede,Carlos Roberto.
Ten wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes were evaluated in microplots with aluminum saturation of 0, 15, 30 and 45%, during 1994, in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The soil was a Distrofic Red Latosol (Typic Haplorthox), with 65% saturation of aluminum, amended with dolomitic lime. Variables evaluated included grain yield and yield components: ears.m-2, grains.ear-1 and the weight of 1000 grains. Genotypes differed in yield and yield components. Increasing aluminum saturation decreased yield, ears.m-2 and grains.ear-1, but did not alter thousand kernel weight. The genotypes reacted differently in relation to the toxic soil aluminum. Anahuac and IAPAR 29 were aluminum sensitive; OCEPAR 16, Trigo BR 18, and Trigo BR 23 were moderately sensitive; IAPAR 6, IAPAR 53,...

RESISTANCE MECHANISMS OF ALUMINUM (Al3+)PHYTOTOXICITY IN CEREALS: PHYSIOLOGICAL, GENETIC AND MOLECULAR BASES R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Inostroza-Blancheteau,Claudio; Soto,Braulio; Ulloa,Pilar; Aquea,Felipe; Reyes-Diaz,Marjorie.
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is one of the main factors limiting crop productivity in acid soils around the world. In cereals, this problem can affect between 30 and 40% of crop yields. One way to reduce the toxic effect of Al is to neutralize the acidity with calcareous amendments. However, this practice is demanding and not very effective. An alternative is the search for genetic variability in the genome of cropping grasses and/or their wild relatives to resist Al. The development of biotechnology and molecular genetics approach has facilitated the understanding of the physiological, genetic and molecular bases in the process of ameliorating these species. This review presents the main physiological mechanisms of Al resistance and the genetic and molecular...
